since tenth grade i started doing my dream job as a desginer, freelancer desginer and all the knowledge i gained was from
deepening reading articles, watching design videos and self – learning the softwear needed in the profession.
at the age of 24 i decided to go to study desgin or as it is called visual communication from it’s foundation through
experienced lecturers lecturers and thus deepen my creative horizons and yes, also to get this “v sign” that
everyone needs to get the confidence and courage for getting the designer title.
after graduating about a year ago i got this push of: “come on now i’ll only send a cv and a portfolio once and that’s it.
the servant of my dreams mine”. so… no, it sucks a little i know. what’s the problem are you asking?
well, they demanded me a number of times and even fired me, how shall i say… in elegantly way because i don’t
have 10 years of experience in my resume and i have not worked in tec companies and studios before.
yep, 10 years: and expect from a student who has just graduated experience in a company / studio,
do you know that look when you look at someone with a crooked head and roll their eyes at the same time?
that was my initial reaction and still remains so! i mean, they know i’m 24 from reading my cv, obeisley, so what did they expect?
that i would gain 10 years of experience in one year? it would have sounded absurd and ridiculous to me at the time.
the “virgin enthusiasm” i had about the profession. yep, i know i’m not the onley one.
after all, there are many like me that companies and studios throw away just beacuse of a lack of years of experience
and we have a lot to offer. so i just moved on…
No fucking way. this is what i thought to myself, another disturbing and annoying question from the arrogant designer. during school the lecturers prepared us for the interviewers to be poker faces and also with a high and well – developed ego, but there was a moment when i saw a tiny smile of enthusiasm from my work and they also quite complimented me on the portfolio, although the words
were really hard to get out of the throat but it happened. finally they remembered to ask the most unimportant and stupid question they ever asked me: “did
you study at shenkar, bezalel or a higher eduction institution?” remember the croked head and rolling eyes? the look is back and this time in a big way!
i replied to them back: “no, i studied at another educational institution and came out with an amazing knowledge and portfolio.” apparently it was a pretty
weak answer, in retrospect i know i should have given a stronger and crushing answer… well… like i said, this is a job as an employee of my first company.
was i angry? yes, did i doubt myself? yes indeed. am i wanted to throw a chair on their heads? hell yes! (but then i would find myself sitting in jail for a murder
of 40 people and then in general my wet dream woild shutterd somewhere within the prison walls). but once again, i moved on…
so after crushing my ego time after time i decided i was starting a war. me vs high tec companies and studios! hell yeah!
my room became a battlefiled for 3 months, there is no article or book i did not read, a video i did not watched, researched, wrote, asked,
cried, got angry and most of all increased the amount of my coffee consumption. over 3 months this is just what i did. i canceled mettings with friends, quit
my job and barely went out to throw the trash, just locked myself in my room and gave my all for the sake of sacred design theory…
i learned a lot, a lot of what i was able to learn on my own before school and also more of the knowledge they gave us in school. i looked at
portfolios of other designers i researched and saw how they present projects and what they focus on. hot projects to upload, content writing, storytelling, etc…
i watched for days jared spool who gave me so much inspiration and became an idol for me, just swept me from lecture to lecture.
i woke up at 08:00 in the morning and fall asleep at 03:00 \ 04:00 at night. it is likely that without all the rejected answers i got i would not have reached
such a high level of understanding and analyzing material in the design world. from here i felt that my “enemy” had receded a bit.
i worked on my portfolio and changed it from a-z. images, context, patterns, thoughts and reflections i just flew and inserted a more mature, innorative
design full of design understanding into my portfolio.
i still continued to work as a freelance and got jobs from clients but as an employee after a month came the good news, although not a permant
job and official entry as a designer in a high – tec company, but i got a freelance job and from there i knew it was just the beginning and it
was going to be harder than i expected…
dear junior deigners, if there is one thing i have learned from this whole period it is that you are worth
more than you have been told. no one will ever give you an honest answers about how much you are better, more
successful or design a project better than them, that’s how the world works.
that’s why it’s important that you do this work for yourself! every day learn a new subject, research, ask questions,
try to understand and improve that every single day.
